Two dead in Bangladesh clashes

DHAKA, Bangladesh (CNN) -- A Bangladeshi opposition activist was shot to death and a police officer was beaten to death Sunday morning in violent clashes between police and activists in the capital, Dhaka, an opposition official said.

According to the official, more than 150 people have been injured and about 100 arrested.

A 14-party opposition alliance -- led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League -- said it wants reforms in the caretaker-government system and the election commission, including the resignation of the chief election commissioner.

To press its point, the opposition is staging a blockade of roads, rail lines and river traffic. Opposition official said hundreds of thousands of activists were taking part.

According to police headquarters, about 10,000 riot police and paramilitary forces were brought into Dhaka in preparation for the opposition protests.
